What is Reiki?
Mikao Usui
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. Reiki treatments consist on hand placements on the body but can also be administered as a non-touch treatment. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words the first one Rei meaning "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki meaning "life force energy".
The reiki practitioner is the channel of the “light force energy” the energy originates from the source of all living things. The more in touch we are with our source, the more vital energy we have, if our vital energy is low we are more likely to be off balance and sickness can manifest. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation providing a feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki is a simple, natural and a safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. Reiki is not affiliated to any religion but it is spiritual in nature and available to everyone.
What the founder recommends:
The founder of Reiki is Dr. Mikao Usui, recommended that one practices simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony for all humanity, his legacy is as follows:
" The secret art of inviting happiness the miraculous medicine of all diseases, Just for today, do not anger, Do not worry and be filled with gratitude, Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people. Every morning and evening join your hands in prayer. Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth." Dr. Mikao Usui
These ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki practitioners and clients. The purpose of reiki is to help people realize that healing of one self consists of consciously deciding to improve oneself through our thoughts, words and actions. In order for the reiki healing energy to have lasting results, the clients must accept responsibility for his or her healing and take an active part in it.
What happens during a reiki session?
If it's your first time with your reiki practitioner you will be asked to fill out a few forms. Then you will be asked to lie down on the massage table fully clothed (reiki can also be given while seating on a chair), you will close your eyes and relax. Some practitioners may use essential oils to help clients attain a deeper relaxation. The client usually lays down on their back for the first half of the session while the therapist applies reiki using a series of hand positions on or above the client's body. The practicioner may also focus on a specified area depending on the clients needs once treatement is completed on one side, the practitioner will guide the client to turn over or change positions and continue giving reiki on the other side. Reiki is a non-invasive intuitive modality which is a great complement to any treatment and has no negative side effects. The reiki session usually lasts about an hour sometimes a little longer.
